Tips to Prolong Your Garbage Disposal’s Lifespan

Installed under your kitchen sink, garbage disposals work to capture food and store it in a chamber. When you switch it on, a shredder ring (similar to a cheese grater) pulverizes it. In order to properly get the water to flush out the waste, and help grease and oil to solidify so they’re easier to break down, we recommend only using cold water. Hot water can have the opposite effect and will result in more drain clogs.

It’s also important to know what can and cannot be put down your garbage disposal. The easiest thing to remember is the fact that it is supposed to be a food disposal. Therefore, anything that isn’t food shouldn’t be put down your disposal and should instead be placed in the garbage. This includes any silverware or metals, plastic, glass, paper, any combustible items, bleach, toys, drain cleaner, and more.

If you’re starting to notice a foul odor from your disposal, we recommend grinding up lemon or orange peels inside it to help spread a fresh, citrus smell throughout your kitchen.

To help prevent rust, clogs, and damaged disposal walls, we recommend that you do not put the following items down your garbage disposal:

• Potato peels

• Coffee grinds (though a small amount is okay to help with strong odors)

• Animal fat

• Any food that expands with water

• Large bones
