We Keep Your Basement Flood-Free

Monroe and Ontario counties are notorious for their wet seasons. Those seasons also happen to be when many Rochester residents like to escape for a bit. There’s nothing worse than coming home from vacation to discover your basement has flooded because you didn’t have a sump pump, or worse, your existing sump pump failed and the house sitter didn’t notice the contents of your basement floating around at the bottom of the stairs.

Whether you are installing a sump pump for the first time or replacing a malfunctioning unit, Pride Plumbing of Rochester can help. Discover the benefits of a quality, professionally-installed sump pump system today. We also offer a cutting-edge remote monitoring system that you can access on your smartphone from anywhere in the world.

How Sump Pumps Work

Sump pumps are installed at the lowest point of your basement or crawl space in a specially created pit. Water flows into the pit via drain channels or naturally up through the soil. When the water reaches a certain level, the sump pump kicks on automatically and directs the water out and away from the house and foundation through a discharge pipe, saving you from a costly flood and possible resulting mold and mildew issues.

For the best protection, we also recommend installing a backup system. Some of your options for backup sump pumps include:

  • Battery-powered backup systems - Designed to operate when the main sump pump fails such as during a power outage. The backup pump is equipped with its own switch that’s activated by the water when it reaches a certain level. It can also work in conjunction with your main pump in the event of a heavy storm if the main pump is having trouble keeping up.

  • Water-powered backup systems - Operate using your municipal water source to create suction which pulls the water out of your sump pit in the event your main sump pump fails. The water is pumped out of your basement through a dedicated piping that’s run through the sill plate and dispersed externally. This is a safety measure to ensure the water leaves your basement in the event your main drainage has been clogged. The system also has an alarm to notify you when your main pump has failed, and your water backup has been turned on.

Sump pumps and backup sump pumps come with alarms to notify you if the pump is not working. A loud signal and bright flashing lights warn you of an issue or failure. Wireless remote alarm systems, such as the Liberty Pump’s NightEye are accessed via your smartphone so you can stay connected and in control no matter where in the world you are.

Maintenance & Care for Primary Sump Pump Systems

By being a Blue or a Stars & Stripes Service Agreement member, you will receive annual maintenance checks on your sump pump by our plumbers. We will always check both your primary and backup sump pump systems to ensure they are in pristine working condition. However, there are some maintenance tips that you can do on your own!

  • Every 3 months, activate the pump by pouring enough water into the sump pump to make sure it's working properly

  • Check the pit to make sure there are no rocks or debris that could cause a blockage and that there is nothing in front of the exit pipe

  • If there is a blockage, remove the source and clean the anti-air lock hole with a wet/dry vacuum

FAQ

The most common reason for a sump pump to fail is a power outage, not a problem with the pump itself. Sometimes the pump fails even if the power stays on. Sump pumps that are cheaper tend to be too small to handle the flow from a major downpour or fast melting snow. Inexpensive pumps are also built with less durable materials, which means they are not very efficient. The pumps could run more often but burn out easily. Even if you have a great sump pump that works incredibly efficiently, if the power goes out, you could still need a backup sump pump to ensure your home is safe. Other reasons it could fail are due to the float switch being stuck or broken, a tripped circuit breaker, a blown fuse, or a clogged exit pipe.
As we just learned, there are many reasons that a primary sump pump could fail. Then what would happen? The area around your sump pump could collect water or you could end up having a full-on basement flood. A backup sump pump will also let your mind be at peace. Rochester and the surrounding areas get a lot of rain and snow. If the primary sump pump can’t handle it, your mind will be at ease knowing you have a backup in place. Backup sump pumps can save you the risk of your basement flooding, which would then prevent costly damages to your home and losses of personal belongings.

We know you only want the best for your home, and if your sump pump fails, you want an effective and efficient backup sump pump.

A battery backup sump pump is a simple device that removes water from your home to the outdoors. It is powered by a strong, long-life battery that can hold a charge for a long time. Battery backups can operate continuously for 4-5 hours or intermittently as long as a day. A basic battery sump pump will move in excess of 2,000 gallons of water waste per hour. Battery backup sump pumps work faster than a water-powered backup and remove more water per square inch.

Water-powered backup sump pumps do not need an external electric power source. They are powered by the municipal water supply. Since the water is constantly flowing, the pump will continue to operate during an extended power outage. However, a water-powered backup sump pump rarely operates, so it is off most of the time and uses no water or energy at all during its “time off.” Water-powered backup sump pumps are very efficient, but they are more expensive. They also use a considerable amount of potable water to move wastewater from the sump basin. Estimates range from half to three-quarters of a gallon of fresh water for every gallon of wastewater. For 800 gallons per hour, that is 600 gallons of fresh water being wasted.

Water-powered backup sump pumps may have some advantages, but the advantages of the battery backup outweigh them. At Pride Plumbing of Rochester, we encourage battery backup sump pumps.
